Thursday, December 18th - Making Memories and Remembering a Friend

On Saturday afternoon, we picked out Aiden's first Christmas tree at the Paris Band Christmas tree lot. Maybe next year we'll start the father and son tradition of hiking into the woods to cut down the perfect Christmas tree off our farm. On the way back from Christmas tree shopping, we decided to stop by Lisa's favorite coffee/sandwich shop, Vardens, in Paris. This was a special treat because we normally avoid public places. Aiden only gets out of the house for doctors' appointments. Since it was late in the afternoon, we were the only customers.

Aiden's eye appointment on Monday went very well. Dr. Howell said that he saw really good progress from the last visit. He reminded us that we still have to follow the progress of his eyes for ten more weeks. He was upbeat though and even made Aiden's next appointment three weeks out rather than two.

Lisa has been feeling a bit under the weather this week so Carol (GG as Aiden calls her) has stayed with us to help take care of Aiden. It's worked out great especially for Aiden. He is loving the extra attention. The shirt he's wearing says it all...Who needs Santa, when I have grandma. Seriously, we really appreciate the help she gave us this week.

With all the joy of the holidays, it can also be a time of sorrow for many. We want to take the time to remember a dear friend of our family, Harlene Erskine, who passed away this week. She was diagnosed with cancer just a few short months ago. Even in her final weeks, she was thinking of others. Harlene and her daughter, Kelly, recently gave Aiden this LL Bean pull over and many other nice things to wear from their home state of Maine.

Our hearts go out to the Erskine family during this difficult time. We ask that you keep the Erskine family in your prayers.

Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 - Smile for the Camera

Aiden's first Thanksgiving went really well. Lisa's family came to our house on Thursday, and we took Aiden to my parents house on Sunday. We kept Aiden pretty much secluded as the Doctor's requested. I'm not sure if Aiden put on any weight over Thanksgiving, but I'm sure I did.

Last week Aiden had 3 doctors' appointments.

The eye appointment with Dr. Howell went well. He said that Aiden's eyes are getting better, but we are still not out of the woods yet. The next appointment will be on Monday.

Aiden's NICU graduate clinic appointment was on Wednesday. The doctor's said that Aiden is doing very well. He weighed 10lbs - 5oz. He is gaining weight at a good rate. Aiden's head measurement showed that his head growth rate was faster than normal. They are going to do an ultrasound to confirm everything is ok.

They asked us to work with him more on his head and trunk control. We have a list of exercises that we do with him 3 times a day. They removed all of Aiden's medication except for his iron drops. Lisa is now trying to breast feed, but it isn't going very well so far. I think Aiden has gotten so used to the bottle, and now he is way too impatient to work for his milk. Aiden is currently still on the Heartrate monitor. Dr. Desai is going to download the results from the monitor prior to removing it, probably this week. His next Graduate appointment will be in April for his "6-month" check-up (even though Aiden will be 6 months old on Monday).

His other appointment was with his Pediatrician for a Synagis vaccination shot. This is his 3rd shot.

Attached is a video of Aiden hanging out in his chair. It is from our camera, so the video quality isn't very good.

Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Monday, November 24th - Before and After

BEFORE the UK vs North Carolina game
AFTER the UK vs North Carolina game

You should have seen his face after the VMI game! I can't help but laugh when he gets angry and his lower lip starts to quiver.

Despite the poor start to the UK basketball season, Aiden had a pretty good week. We discontinued four medicines on Wednesday. That makes bottle preparation and feeding a lot easier. Aiden sure doesn't miss the bottle that had sodium chloride medicine in it - he hated that one.

Aiden got a little oxygen support this weekend with his feedings. This was just a precautionary measure after Lisa discussed Aiden's fatigue level during feedings with the doctor. The monitor information was analyzed on Monday and everything looked good. As a result, we've discontinued the extra oxygen.

We hope that you all have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. We certainly have a lot to be Thankful for. We are especially thankful for our 10lb - 1 oz little miracle.

Keep Aiden in your Prayers!

Sunday, November 16, 2008 - Home in Paris

Our small family is finally home. We moved in this past Monday and so far everything has gone really well. It is a bigger adjustment for Lisa since she is now home alone with Aiden all through the week.

Aiden's oxygen tube has been removed for one week now. He has done great without it. The monitor has not gone off at all. He seems comfortable, but he does seem to be sleeping more recently. He certainly looks better without the tape and tubes on his face. Now the only thing attached to his body are the two monitor sensors.

Here is Aiden sporting his birthday suit...

Aiden is now 5 months old. He seems to be changing everyday. He has started following objects with his eyes. He also has started making some facial expressions. His favorite expression is similar to the one above in his bathtub - a look of what in the world are you guys doing to me.

Aiden's eye appointment on Monday went very well. The doctor said that he was able to see some progression of blood vessel growth towards the front of his eye and not towards the center. This is great news. He said that we are not out of the woods yet, but it is a good sign. His next appointment is in two weeks. Tomorrow, we will remove 4 of Aiden's medications. Only 3 more to go.

Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Sunday, November 9, 2008 - Rock the Cradle and the Vote

Tuesday was Election Day.

ACORN enrolled Aiden, and Lisa took him to the polls. Aiden wouldn't tell us who he voted for but we think there's a good chance that he placed a write-in vote for SpongeBob.

Aiden's Doctor's appointment on Wednesday with the NICU Graduate Clinic went very well. Aiden weighs 8 lbs - 11 oz. Dr. Desai told us that we can remove his oxygen support while Aiden is awake now. Also, the oxygen flow rate was reduced from 1/4 to 1/8 while he is sleeping. If everything continues to go well, Aiden's oxygen support will be completely removed this coming Wednesday! Aiden has done great so far with the reduced oxygen. His monitor has only gone off twice this past week for low respiratory rate.

Dr. Desai gave us an exercise program for Aiden. She spent some time explaining how a preemie's muscle development is much different than a full term baby. We are supposed to exercise him 2 ~3 times a day. They also assessed Aiden's adjusted age to be his original due date (October 7th). Even though he is nearly 5 months old, developmentally he is about 3 1/2 weeks old.

Aiden is doing great. He is starting to look around a little more and stays awake a little longer. He is certainly a blessing, and we love having him home.

There are no doctor's appointments this week. Yeah! Tomorrow we plan to leave Camp Carol and head home. It will be a difficult adjustment, but I'm sure we can persuade Carol to visit us often. It will be nice to have our family home for the holidays.

Keep Aiden in your prayers. Have a great week.

Monday, November 3, 2008 - 1st Halloween

Aiden was 20 weeks old on Sunday. Aiden weighs 8 lbs 6 ounces, and he is 19 1/2 inches in length. He had his Synagis vaccination at Georgetown Pediatrics on Thursday. He will continue to get this vaccine on a monthly basis through the RSV season.

Aiden had an appointment with the kidney specialist, Dr. Chisthi, this past Wednesday. He decided to discontinue the amoxicillin. He does not feel that the antibiotic is necessary and could be less effective if he gets an infection in the future. He described his reflux as a mild grade II on the left side. He has a follow-up appointment in January at which time he will do a test assessing the status.

Aiden's eye appointment on Monday went ok. No major changes. Next appointment will be in two weeks.

This coming Wednesday, Aiden has a doctor's appointment with the NICU Graduate Clinic. This will be an interesting appointment because we will find out how Aiden is progressing and see if they will make changes in his oxygen support. As you can probably guess, all of these Doctors' appointments keep Lisa and Aiden busy.

We decided to venture out on Halloween night. Lisa wanted the whole family to dress in costume. Lisa was momma pumpkin, Aiden was baby pumpkin, and I was guy in a plaid shirt. We went trick-or-treating at Grandma & Grandpa Murray's house and Quentin & Missy's house. We got robbed....we didn't get any candy!!!

Here's our little pumpkin. He either doesn't like his pumpkin costume, or he is planning an escape.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - Our Pumpkin

The internet was down over the weekend at Camp Carol, so I'm updating this blog from Mexico. I tried to talk Lisa into letting me put Aiden in my suitcase, but she won't let him out of her sights.

Aiden has had two eye appointments since the last post. Both visits showed no changes in blood vessel growth. This is good and bad. It is good that the vessels haven't started growing towards the center of the eye, but it is bad that the vessels aren't growing. The doctor will continue to monitor it every week.

Aiden has a doctor's appointment tomorrow to get a renal exam to check the function of his kidneys. Next Wednesday he has a doctor's appointment with the graduate clinic to see how he is progressing. We are hoping Aiden can drop some of these medications. It is a heavy burden on Lisa to bottle feed Aiden and then breast pump separately since all these meds are put into bottles throughout the day.

I will be returning from Mexico to take our little pumpkin Trick-or-Treating! We dressed him up early for Halloween. I know Aiden is excited about getting all that candy. He really likes Reese's Pieces and Almond Joys. No apples or healthy treats - Aiden doesn't like that stuff.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Happy Halloween!!!

Keep Aiden in your prayers.

Sunday, October 19, 2008 - 2nd Week Home

Aiden is doing great. We survived another week with him home. Aiden only had one Doctor's appointment this past week. This was only for his immunization shot. He weighed in at 7lbs -14oz.

We are still learning the best method and times for his feeds. It has been fairly easy to read his cues, but sometimes nothing makes sense. He is inconsistent in his sleep patterns, but he did sleep for 6 straight hours last night. Hallelujah!

We are so happy to have him home, and so far everything has been going great. Lisa loves singing to him, and I love to pester him.

He has another eye appointment tomorrow. Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Today is our 6th year wedding anniversary.

Monday, October 13, 2008 - First Week Home

I know, I know.... I haven't been updating the blog enough. Being new to fatherhood, it is hard to find time for anything extracurricular. Aiden has kept Lisa and I very busy this past week. (At least that is my excuse anyways)

Aiden is doing great. We absolutely love having him home. It is great not to have to visit the hospital every day. Aiden pretty much just eats, sleeps, cries, and pees all day long. We are feeling more comfortable with his situation. He rarely has any heart rate or respiratory rate drops now. Part of it is because we have learned to tape the leads down to his body, taking away all the false alarms. Part of it is better management of his bottle feeds.

I've already had to apologize to poor little Aiden. His mother has been dressing him up like a little doll. It is a little embarrassing for him, and I'm sure he will never live this down...

As you can tell by the expression on his face, he is wondering what in the world his mother is doing to him. Don't worry, I rescued him.

Aiden had 4 doctors appointments since the previous post. Two to the eye doctor, Dr. Howell, and two to his Pediatrician, Dr. Hambrick. His eye appointments have gone well so far. Another appointment is setup for next week. The doctor said the blood vessel growth in his eyes have improved, but it is still "worrisome". Aiden has retinopathy of prematurity. Basically, the blood vessels must grow on the outer edge of the eye and not towards the center. Once they see growth towards the center, they can perform laser surgery to try to stop retinal detachment.

Keep Aiden in your prayers.

Next post will be Sunday.

Sunday, October 5, 2008 - Great Weekend

Although UK lost the game, it was the best football game ever...

Everything is going really well so far. We are starting to get everything figured out with his medications, monitor, and oxygen support. We learned the hard way last night, but tonight we are strategizing his feed times and amounts to try to maximize our sleep.

We took a road trip to our home in Paris today. Aiden did great in the car seat. He slept the whole way there and back. Tomorrow we have a doctor's appointment with his Pediatrician in Georgetown.

Aiden is 16 weeks old today. Keep the little guy in your prayers. We love having him home.

October 3, 2008 - Finally Home!

After 135 consecutive days of hospital visits, our family is finally home. Aiden spent 110 days in the NICU, and he was released today from UK Children's Hospital at 2:30pm. We left with oxygen, a monitor, 8 different drugs, lots of paperwork, and memories for a lifetime.

Aiden's arrival at Camp Carol:

We are so thrilled to have him home. Our nervousness has settled down, and we are ready to start being parents. We always knew we had a son, but now it feels real. So far all the practice in the NICU has paid off. We've only had to call for help once. Luckily, a handful of nurses and doctors have passed on their cell phone numbers in case we have questions. It also helps that his home monitor will wake the neighbors when it goes off.

We will continue to keep you posted. Unfortunately Aiden's struggles are far from over. The status of his eyes have gotten worse, and now the doctors are checking him every week. They told us not to be alarmed, but they just need to keep a close watch on it. He already has multiple doctor visits scheduled throughout the next few weeks.

Tracey Robinson and Alice Carpenter - two of Aiden's primary nurses

The doctors and nurses of the NICU have been amazing. We couldn't have gotten through such a difficult time without their help. It takes a special person to do what they do. They deal with babies like Aiden and Caleb every day.

Thank God for the doctors and nurses of UK Children's Hospital!

Keep Aiden in your prayers.

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 - Departure Date Set

Excitement and anxiety have set in.... Aiden will be coming home on Friday!!!

We are so excited but very nervous. Lisa hardly slept last night. Tomorrow night we will spend the night in the NICU as a trial run. We will be in a secluded room in which we will be responsible for all of Aiden's care throughout the night and next morning. This will be a good test with the comfort of a full NICU team outside of our room.

Since our home in Paris is far from civilization, Friday we are taking Aiden to Camp Carol. Don't worry, we gave Carol a few days notice. :) We are planning to stay at Camp Carol for the first week prior to going home. We are still trying to bribe one of the NICU nurses into moving in with us.

Aiden is at 39 weeks gestation. One week from his original due date of October 7th. He weighs 6lbs - 14oz. He will be going home with oxygen support and a monitor.

Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Sunday, September 28, 2008 - NG Tube Removed

As if someone flipped a switch, Aiden is now consistently taking his feeds through a bottle. He has been doing great for a day and a half of feedings now. Dr. Desai decided to remove the NG tube today.

The 10-day course of antibiotics has concluded. They also reduced his calorie supplements from 27 to 24. This change seems to have increased the frequency of bowel movements. He doesn't seem to be as gassy and uncomfortable.

Aiden is 15 weeks old. He weighs 6lbs -15oz. We should be getting really close to coming home. We'll keep you posted.

Keep praying for Aiden!

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - 38 Weeks Gestation

Aiden is at 38 weeks gestational age today. Only 2 weeks from his original due date. He is still at 6lbs - 9oz in weight and is 18.7 inches long. His course of antibiotics will be complete on Monday.

The last few days have been quiet. Aiden has slept through most of it. He continues to be sporadic in taking a bottle. He took two full bottles last night but very little during the day on Monday or today.

Keep Aiden in your prayers.

Sunday, September 21, 2008 - On the Mend

Aiden is doing fine. He is still hanging out on the 4th floor. He is 14 weeks old and weighs 6lbs - 9oz. He gained 6oz last night.

He seems to be feeling better with the assistance of antibiotics for his urinary tract infection. His lumbar puncture and blood culture results were negative. Great news!

He did really good with 4 consecutive feedings yesterday. Two of which he took the whole bottle. Today, he seemed exhausted, but he did end up taking a full bottle late in the evening.

Aiden got a visit from Clergy. Pastor David Casey came by and tried to talk Aiden into becoming an Oklahoma Sooners fan. Aiden pretended to be asleep because he bleeds blue.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 - Back Upstairs

Aiden decided he didn't enjoy the life of luxury in Neo 3. He was transferred back upstairs to the NICU on the 4th floor Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.. His new home is in a very busy Nursery #6 with a window view of the VA hospital.

It is amazing how comfortable we had become with his situation and the thought that he would be coming home any day. It is amazing how quickly things can change. The dye test from Tuesday showed that he has urinary reflux. A culture from yesterday tested positive for infection in his urinary tract. The doctors and nurses have already started him on a course of two different antibiotics with a newly installed IV in his head.

They also did a lumbar puncture. So far the cultures are negative, but they will be monitored for the next three days. He got a blood transfusion today and his last chest x-ray was not as good as the one in August.

With all this seemingly bad news, I'm humbly reminded of how fortunate we are. Just walking back to his crib in the corner of the NICU quickly reminded me of the amazing miracles in that hospital. Aiden is certainly one of them.

Keep praying for Aiden. He is now 6lbs of miracle.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - Power Nap

It's hard to believe that it's been three months since the boys were born. It's also hard to believe that Aiden is moving from preemie clothes to normal newborn sizes. He weighs 5 lbs. 14 ounces.

He was pretty tired today. He had a VCUG test (voiding cystourethrogram) this morning. My understanding is that they take an xray of the bladder area while using dye so that they can see if he is refluxing urine back into the kidneys. We should have the results tomorrow. This test must have taken a lot out of him. He slept all afternoon. He even slept through his diaper change. This is a picture from this afternoon.

When we called tonight his nurse said that he was really awake. He almost drank a full bottle at his 8 p.m. care time. I guess the power nap gave him the boost he needed.

Keep Aiden in your prayers!

Sunday, September 14, 2008 - Aiden's Drinking Problem

Aiden is 13 Weeks old and weighs 5 lbs - 12 oz.

We are starting to believe that Aiden is enjoying his time in the NICU. He doesn't seem to be in any hurry to come home. Maybe he is getting used to having the Nurses around and having them answer to all his needs. Maybe he knows that he will be leaving the Marriott and going home to Motel 6.

Aiden is still struggling with his bottle feeds. He does well only when he wants to do well. When we want him to take a bottle, he doesn't want any part of it. Who would have thought that sucking and swallowing could be so difficult? It takes a lot of coordination to do this and also breathe. He is doing better, but still is not consistent enough. He's starting to take a full bottle about once a day. During the rest of his feedings during the day, he will only take about 25% of the bottle. The rest of the bottle is fed through the gavage tube.

Keep Aiden in your prayers! We can't wait to get him home.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 - Our Oompa Loompa

Aiden is at 36 weeks gestation. He weighed 5 lbs - 11oz on Monday and was really swollen from fluid build-up. After the doctors put him back on diuretic medicine, our little Oompa Loompa pooped and peed all day and dropped down to 5lbs - 8oz. He started feeling much better this afternoon.

He hasn't taken a bottle these past two days. Nurse Alice thought that he wasn't feeling very well due to the fluid build up. Lisa is going to try the bottle tomorrow.

Aiden was a little camera shy today....

Keep praying for Aiden!

Sunday, September 7, 2008 - 12 Weeks Old

Aiden is now 12 weeks old and has broken the 5lb mark. He weighed 5lbs - 5oz on Saturday night and 5lbs - 10oz tonight. Such a huge weight gain in one night will bring attention from the doctors, because he is probably just retaining fluids.

Aiden is still doing good in his new location. It is very quiet in this nursery. There are very few alarms going off and usually only a few people in the room. Aiden is doing a little better with the bottle but still not great. He has to be able to take a bottle consistently and gain weight without the gavage feedings.

Aiden, Lisa, and I continue to be showered with love. Aiden will be a well dressed boy. He can wear a new outfit everyday from now until kindergarten. We may have to build an expansion to the nursery to fit everything in there. Thanks for all the support, prayers, and gifts.

Keep praying for Aiden!

Thursday, August 4, 2008 - Graduation

Well, it's not college but it's close. After 81 days in the hospital, Aiden has finally changed rooms - He Graduated! He has been transferred from Nursery 5 of the 4th floor NICU to the "Graduation" Nursery on the 3rd floor. This is a newer nursery that was built for overflow. Generally, the healthier babies are transferred to this nursery in preparation for going home.

We haven't seen his new digs yet because he got transferred at midnight. Can't wait to see him tomorrow.

Aiden is still at 4lbs - 15oz. He is nursing well, and doing slightly better with the bottle. He does still have some oxygen desaturations and heart rate drops.

Keep praying for Aiden!

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - 35 Weeks Gestation

Property of Mom Forever
Aiden is at 35 weeks gestation and now weighs 4lbs - 15oz. Nearly 5lbs.

Aiden slept through Labor Day. He didn't nurse real well yesterday, but did much better today. He went through physical therapy today. A physical therapist from the UK Graduate Clinic exercised Aiden and monitored his reflexes, muscle tone, and motor skills. This therapist will follow Aiden's progress up to 2 years of age. She has some items to monitor as time progresses, but in general everything went well.

Lisa and I finally got a chance to work on Aiden's nursery. It is nearly finished...

Sunday, August 31, 2008 - Showered with Love

Aiden is 11 weeks old and weighs 4lbs - 12 oz.

He was pretty much exhausted today when Lisa and I visited him at the NICU. I believe he was exhausted over his pre-game crib party for the UK vs UL game. It wasn't a pretty game, but Aiden and I will take the UK victory.

He is still doing very well. He has really progressed on nursing and is doing slightly better on his bottle feeds. Lisa has started to nurse him twice every day now. He does much better nursing than taking a bottle.

Dr. Bada removed his caffeine support today (yet another drug off his list).

Aiden was showered with love today by lots of family and friends. We are so thankful for everyones thoughts, prayers, and gifts. We are so fortunate to even be at a point where we can celebrate.

Have a great Labor Day! Keep praying for Aiden.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 - Big Boy Bed

Aiden is still doing great. He is at 34 weeks gestational age, and weighs 4lbs - 8oz.

He has now moved into a crib! Yep, he is a big boy now. No warmers are needed. Controlling his body temperature is one more requirement for going home. The only thing left now is consistently taking in his feedings through a bottle or nursing. He is doing better in this category, but he is lacking consistency. It is only a matter of time now.

Aiden didn't stay in his new crib long with Grandma and Grandpa around...

With seven kids and eleven grandchildren, these two are professionals.

Wednesday night, Carol, Sharon, Lisa, and I took an infant CPR class at UK. This class is mandatory for all babies coming out of the NICU. We hope that we will never have to use this training, but we are better prepared if something does happen.

Keep Praying for Aiden!

Aiden's prediction for the weekend... UK 20 UL 17

Go CATS!!!

Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 10 Weeks & 4 Big Ones

Aiden is doing fantastic. He is now 10 weeks old, and he broke the 4lb mark on Friday. Our little porker weighed in at 4 lbs - 5oz today. He's growing up fast. His whole body nearly fit in the palm of my hand when he was born, and now he is the length of my hand and forearm. He is 16.75" long (born at 12.25").

Aiden is doing very well with the low-flow cannula and the new warmer bed. Fortunately, the nurses rarely have to turn on the warmer. Lisa and I like the new bed because we can pester him more easily. For some reason he is always trying to sleep.

Keep praying for Aiden. We don't know when he will be able to go home, but it should be within a few weeks based upon the feedback we are getting from the nurses. We are getting really excited.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 - New Bed

Aiden had a big day today. He got transferred out of his incubator and into a bed with a warmer. The bed is now open to the world. The warmer will kick on depending upon Aiden's temperature.
Grandma stole Aiden out of his new bed.

In addition to his new bed, the nurses also changed his high flow cannula to a low flow cannula. This is the tube in his nostrils in which he gets oxygen support. Aiden can go home on a low flow cannula. Yet another requirement has been met for going home. Now the only other requirements are for him to be able to control his own temperature and be able to drink milk on his own. He is doing both of these items right now to a certain extent, but he just needs to do them more consistently.

Aiden now weighs 3 lbs - 15 oz. One ounce away from 4lbs!

Keep praying for Aiden
